Phase–Space Constraints on Visible and Dark Matter Distributions in Elliptical Galaxies

چکیده

There are observational and theoretical indications that both the visible (stars) and the dark matter density distributions in elliptical galaxies increase significantly up to the galactic center. I present here some analytical results obtained with the aid of self–consistent, spherically symmetric two component galaxy models. These results suggest the possibility that this similar behavior could be a direct consequence of the structural and dynamical constraints imposed by the request of positivity of the phase–space distribution function (DF) of each density component.

Cold Dark Matter and Strong Gravitational Lensing: Concord or Conflict?

Using the number and sizes of observed gravitational lenses, I derive upper limits on the dark matter content of elliptical galaxies. On average, dark matter can account for no more than 33% of the total mass within one effective radius (Re) of elliptical galaxies, or 40% of the mass within 2Re (95% confidence upper limits). I show that galaxies built from Cold Dark Matter (CDM) mass distributi...

Halo Cores and Phase Space Densities: Observational Constraints on Dark Matter Physics and Structure Formation

We explore observed dynamical trends in a wide range of dark-matter-dominated systems (about seven orders of magnitude in mass) to constrain hypothetical dark matter candidates and scenarios of structure formation. First, we argue that neither generic warm dark matter (collisionless or collisional) nor self-interacting dark matter can be responsible for the observed cores on all scales. Both sc...

Modelling Elliptical Galaxies: Phase–Space Constraints on Two–Component (γ1,γ2) Models

In the context of the study of the properties of the mutual mass distribution of the bright and dark matter in elliptical galaxies, I present a family of two–component, spherical, self–consistent galaxy models, where one density distribution follows a γ1 profile, and the other a γ2 profile [hereafter (γ1, γ2) models], with different total masses and “core” radii. A variable amount of (radial) o...

Twisting of X-ray Isophotes in Triaxial Galaxies

We investigate X-ray isophote twists created by triaxiality differences between the luminous stellar distributions and the dark halos in elliptical galaxies. For a typically oblate luminous galaxy embedded in a more prolate halo formed by dissipationless collapse, the triaxiality difference of ∆T ≃ 0.7 leads to typical isophote twists of 〈∆ψX〉 ≃ 16 ± 19 at 3 stellar effective radii. In a model ...

On Wave Dark Matter, Shells in Elliptical Galaxies, and the Axioms of General Relativity

This paper is a sequel to the author’s paper entitled “On Dark Matter, Spiral Galaxies, and the Axioms of General Relativity” which explored a geometrically natural axiomatic definition for dark matter modeled by a scalar field satisfying the Einstein-Klein-Gordon wave equations which, after much calculation, was shown to be consistent with the observed spiral and barred spiral patterns in disk...
